The Australian magpie is a medium-sized black and white bird native to Australia and southern New Guinea. An adult Australian magpie is a fairly robust bird and are distinctive with their black and white markings. They have golden brown eyes and a solid wedge-shaped white and black bill. With their long legs, the Australian magpie walks rather than waddles or hops and spends much time on the ground.

The magpie is described as one of Australia's most accomplished songbirds with their array of complex vocalisations. They are common, widespread and have adapted well to human habitation and can commonly be found in parks, gardens and across farmland. In spring (and occasionally in autumn) a small minority of breeding magpies (almost always males) become aggressive and swoop and attack those who approach their nests. Aussie children all fear the swooping magpie in the schoolgrounds.
